Deaf people are used to people looking at us when we sign in public, but for one American Deaf man, signing in public nearly led to his death - when his ASL signs were wrongly seen as being gang signs.

See this story in BSL.

Terrance Ervin Daniels, was signing with another Deaf man when a hearing man thought they were using gang signs, and went on to stab him with a kitchen knife.

Daniels staggered to a nearby road, where he collapsed on a grass verge. He was taken to hospital and was very lucky to survive the attack.

A 22 year old man has been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and felony assault on a handicapped person.

In a similar incident in 2011, two Deaf people at an American nightclub were stabbed when their signs were also mistaken for gang signs.

Perhaps Deaf people should think carefully before booking holidays in America?
